The importance of protein after weight loss surgery

Updated: Jun 1, 2020

Ensuring your body has enough protein in each meal is crucial. After surgery protein is needed for wound healing and to ensure the functioning of your immune system to optimise recovery. Protein also provides the building blocks for every cell, muscle and organ, which need constant replacement. Your intake is even more important after weight loss surgery as you are eating less calories per day, so you have to make sure that many of your calories come from good protein sources.

When it comes to your weight journey, protein in your diet maintains and builds muscle mass which is essential for your weight loss. If your body does not receive enough protein from your diet, it will break down even more of your muscle mass to compensate. Other benefits of protein include healthier skin, nails, and hair, where hair loss can occur if intake is insufficient. Protein also fills you up for longer periods of time, so you will find yourself less hungry between meals.

Men typically need at least 60-80g per day of protein, but you may be advised to consume 90g per day if you have undergone a biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch.
